Photoshop Task

To begin our skills development we were introduced to Photoshop. By following the Photoshop guide provided by my teacher I was able to complete the above advert. As someone that has never used Photoshop before in their life this was all completely new to me. However I followed the guide carefully and was able to complete the advert in just one lesson; and even help others with theirs as well. Surprisingly I had some fun completing this task. I learnt the basics of Photoshop and then used those basics to create an image of my own.

After being tasked with putting something of our own together on Photoshop I decided to do something related to one of my favorite TV shows. DVD covers are never just one photo, they are put together the same way I did my first task. So I started to work on my own DVD cover for the TV show NCIS Los Angeles. The above image is what I finished with. This was actually my fourth attempt as my first three were very much trial and error with a lot of errors along the way. For the final image I used the same techniques I had learnt from the first task; and if I do say so myself it turned our pretty good. I am very happy with it.

Cover and Speculative Letters

Definitions.
Cover Letter.
A cover letter is a document that is sent with your CV. It is traditionally done as a front cover. However it differs from a CV because it is specifically written to correspond with the job you are applying for.

Speculative Letter.
A speculative letter is sent alongside your CV when you apply to a company that isn’t currently advertising any job vacancies. Because you’re not applying for a specific job the speculative letter should be aimed at the company you are looking to work for, so they know you are interested in any positions that become available.

Things to remember when writing a cover letter.
A cover letter should draw together all the facts in your CV and communicate your enthusiasm for the position. The letter must be well presented and produced on plain paper using black ink as this produces a clear photocopy. Ideally the letter should be typed but above all the letter should be brief and concise.

Your cover letter should be:
  • To introduce yourself (personal information
  • To register your interest in a specific vacancy
  • To highlight your relevant qualifications
  • Convincing so the employer is encouraged to offer you an interview
  • Kept brief and concise
  • Written in a clear, easy to read font, e.g. Arial or Times New Roman, size 12
  • Tailored to each job you apply for
  • Printed on plain paper using black ink
  • Set out as a formal business letter

Things to remember when writing a speculative letter.
When writing a speculative letter to inquire about possible vacancies, the same rules apply as the cover letter, but is also important to include the following:
  • State the position/s you are interested in on the subject line of the letter/email
  • Ensure you have researched the organisation you are applying to and refer to reasons as to why you would like to work for them
  • Be sure to follow up on your speculative letter, around one week later, with a phone call or email to check that the relevant person has received it. Ask whether they would meet with you to discuss future job opportunities and ways of gaining work or further experience in this area.

Differences between a Speculative and a Cover Letter.
The significant differences between a cover letter and a Speculative letter are:
  • A cover letter acts as a summary of the job seeker’s resume whereas the application letter has detailed information on the job seeker’s skills and abilities.
  • An application letter reveals the applicant’s skills, qualifications, strengths and skills relevant to the job at hand while a cover letter will bear the candidates contacts and a brief highlight why the candidate is the best for the position while ignoring in-depth details.
  • An application letter can act as a stand-alone document during a job application showcasing why the applicant is suitable for the position. A cover letter should be accompanied by a resume to qualify as a full application package.
  • The application letter will work to describe why you’re the best candidate, besides booking an interview for the applicant; the cover letter will only show the intention of the letter and define the professional ability of the sender.

Creative CV

Current Intentions

If I was asked a few years ago what I wanted to do with my life I couldn’t have answered you and I still can’t. I do, however, know that I want to use my business and travel & tourism A-levels. My life plan only goes as far as the next five academic years; and even they its only a lose plan.

This year, 2019 to 2020, I am doing my last year of college. I am going to work hard to achieve a distinction star in my BTEC Travel & Tourism and a distinction in my Level 4 Foundation Diploma in Creative Enterprise. These grades I’m hoping will get me accepted into university because I’ll have three A-Levels and a Foundation diploma which will hopefully help me stand out from everyone else.

After I finish college, 2020 to 2024, I am looking to attend my chosen university to do a Business Management Degree with a year abroad. I have chosen three of the five universities we are allowed to apply for. They are: the University of Hull, University of East Anglia, University of Kent, University of Chester and the University of Southampton. I am looking to do a year abroad in America as part of my degree because I love to travel, and it would be an excellent way for me to see a different part of the world.

After graduating, if I get to graduate, my plan thins out. By the time I finish University I will be twenty two and I am hoping to move to Norwich and find a job there. I still don’t know what job I am looking to do yet, but I’m hoping during my time abroad and at university I'll figure it out.

However, If I don’t get into university or decide not to go to university the there is always the option of doing an apprenticeship. They aren’t something I’ve look into a lot because I would really love the opportunity to go to university.

About a month ago is saw something on Facebook that has stuck with me. It said:

‘ Picture this: It’s ten years from now. You’re Married. Nice home. Good Job. It’s Christmas. Your kids are asleep. You and your husband are on the couch having a drink and watching TV. It’s snowing outside, and tomorrow is Saturday. All the hard work was worth it. You made it.’

This may sound weird, but this quote meant the world to me because the picture that is painted above is everything I have been working towards.
